The design of the Cauldron is informed by its unique location in sight of the rugged Wasatch Mountain Range and the colors of the mountains and deserts of Utah. Its design was inspired by the angular forms of the Salt Lake Olympic mark and the Light the Fire Within theme of the Games. The triangular configuration is constructed with steel that is clad with opaque and transparent glass. Three angular ribbons rise and twist around a central tower 117 feet vertically to support the flame within a crystalline water-coated chalice.
