The Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games is celebrated within the Olympic Cauldron Park in Salt Lake City, Utah. Located at the University of Utah’s Rice Eccles Stadium where the opening and closing Ceremonies were held in February 2002, the park serves as a permanent site for visitors to recall the excitement of the Games. Situated within the park is the Hoberman Arch that was used as a curtain for the Medals Plaza stage and a visitor’s center with a multimedia film highlighting the Games. The featured centerpiece is the Olympic Cauldron. Holding the Olympic Flame throughout the duration of the Games, the illuminated cauldron is among the featured icons of the Olympic Games event.

The Cauldron is placed within the center of a large, reflective sheet of water, and names of the 2002 medalists are engraved within stones along the edge of the water. A stepped water cascade creates a white, turbulent flow of activity behind the cauldron. The cascade originates from an elevated reflecting pool, and two additional cascades flow gently over long, sloping sides.

During future Olympic events and anniversaries, the Olympic Flame will be relit within the water-coated glass chalice supported by its structure of steel and glass.
