WET developed this water feature at Millenia Walk in Singapore in collaboration with Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates.

The Millenia Walk is part of a comprehensive commercial development in the Pontiac Marina District, a newly developed area that includes Singapore’s Convention Center, office complexes, commercial venues and hotels. Among them is the Ritz-Carlton, designed by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates, for which WET also developed the building’s water expressions.

The Millenia Walk is an isolated promenade and plaza where visitors can find tranquility away from the vehicular traffic and activity of the urban scene. The water feature is designed to engage the surrounding architecture and landscape of Millenia Walk.

A ten meter high, canted wall is composed of alternating panels of glass and deeply carved granite. As water cascades over the wall, the varying surfaces render the water in dramatically different textures, from smooth and delicate to robust and energetic. At the base of the wall the water cascade joins an expanse of WaterSkin™, a treatment in which a thin membrane of water covers an area of black granite that is flush with the surrounding dry scape and pedestrian walkways. The result is a highly reflective mirror finish surface that emulates a pool. Because there is no depth in the WaterSkin area, there is no need for a barrier between the pool and its surroundings. This treatment, along with the textures of the adjacent water wall, creates a work that engages its environment and is in seamless rapport with the surrounding architectures and landscape.

To further enhance the quality of seamlessness, visitors can walk behind the wall where the panels of granite and glass alternate to create a pattern of opacity and shimmering translucence.
