WET developed a series of water expressions for the exterior pedestrian walkways at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, California. The character of water in each feature varies to express the spirit of adjacent shops.

Within a patio surrounded by stores for children is a whimsical water work intended for interaction and play. A cluster of bobbing marbles of water delicately emits from the openings of the surface of an elevated platform. Toddlers and young children play in a mischievous field of popping water jets.

Within the central plaza, the gathering place in the shopping area is a focal-point punctuation of water. Surrounded by seating, a circular wave reaches outward from the core of a round pool. Swelling and retreating, the wave creates tumbling white water and its associated rich sounds. In the evening, this water figure is vibrantly illuminated from within with white light.
