On any given weekend, this feature in downtown Kansas City is populated with children. Drawn like moths to a midnight lamp sale, they flock here to cool off, goof off, and invent an infinite number ways in which to interact with the vertical jets. You might see a boy practicing karate, chopping a stream in half as he wishes he might a more human, and drier, opponent. Or you could catch a future Jackie Joyner-Kersee leaping over a frothy jet, or a teenager enjoying the simple shock of sticking his face squarely in an erupting stream. As for the adults, those who aren't playing in the water themselves can look on from any of thirty-two granite stools bordering the feature. And while they rest their feet, they might reflect on how the fountain creates a focal point for the surrounding business and shopping district—and how the programmable jets can be choreographed to accommodate any music, event, or holiday. They might also appreciate how the water softens the sound of traffic from Grand Boulevard, and how happy they are not to be sitting in traffic at this moment.
